1 Chronicles 4: Descendants of Judah

1     The sons of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.

2     Reaiah the son of Shobal fathered Jahath, and Jahath fathered Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites.

3     These were the sons of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash; and the name of their sister was Hazzelelponi,

4     and Penuel fathered Gedor, and Ezer fathered Hushah. These were the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah, the father of Bethlehem.

5     Ashhur, the father of Tekoa, had two wives, Helah and Naarah;

6     Naarah bore him Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were the sons of Naarah.

7     The sons of Helah: Zereth, Izhar, and Ethnan.

8     Koz fathered Anub, Zobebah, and the clans of Aharhel, the son of Harum.

9     Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain."

10   Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!" And God granted what he asked.

11   Chelub, the brother of Shuhah, fathered Mehir, who fathered Eshton.

12   Eshton fathered Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father of Ir-nahash. These are the men of Recah.

13   The sons of Kenaz: Othniel and Seraiah; and the sons of Othniel: Hathath and Meonothai.

14   Meonothai fathered Ophrah; and Seraiah fathered Joab, the father of Ge-harashim, so-called because they were craftsmen.

15   The sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam; and the son of Elah: Kenaz.

18   And his Judahite wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah.

19   The sons of the wife of Hodiah, the sister of Naham, were the fathers of Keilah the Garmite and Eshtemoa the Maacathite.

21   The sons of Shelah the son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah, and the clans of the house of linen workers at Beth-ashbea;

22   and Jokim, and the men of Cozeba, and Joash, and Saraph, who ruled in Moab and returned to Lehem (now the records are ancient).

23   These were the potters who were inhabitants of Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the king's service.

29   Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad,

30   Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag,

37   Ziza the son of Shiphi, son of Allon, son of Jedaiah, son of Shimri, son of Shemaiah---

38   these mentioned by name were princes in their clans, and their fathers' houses increased greatly.

39   They journeyed to the entrance of Gedor, to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks,

40   where they found rich, good pasture, and the land was very broad, quiet, and peaceful, for the former inhabitants there belonged to Ham.

41   These, registered by name, came in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and destroyed their tents and the Meunites who were found there, and marked them for destruction to this day, and settled in their place, because there was pasture there for their flocks.

42   And some of them, five hundred men of the Simeonites, went to Mount Seir, having as their leaders Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi.

43        And they defeated the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day.

Things to think about…

1.    It is noteworthy in 1 Chronicles 3 that the genealogy of David precedes the genealogies of the sons of Israel. It shows where the future focus of the chronicler lies. The Davidic kingdom was and still is the centrepiece in Israel’s history. We of course know that David’s greater Son the Lord Jesus is the true Star of David, and we pray that the sons of Israel would have their eyes open to Him.

2.    The list of names in 1Chr 3 follow up to and after the captivity of Babylon. Note the name of  “Jeconiah, the captive” in 1Chr 3:17. This confirms that 1 Chronicles was compiled after the captivity. While the Chronicler was using ancient records to compile the genealogies the final version of 1 Chronicles was written well after the Jews had returned from Babylon. The final names listed in David’s line were likely contemporaries of the writer. In fact we know that Jeconiah’s grandson Zerubbabel came back in 536BC, Neh 12:1.

3.    Judah is listed as the first tribe of Israel in 1 Chronicles 4. Why is this the case when Reuben was the firstborn. We know Reuben went into his father’s concubine Bilhah and violated his father’s bed and therefore lost the right of the firstborn. The tribe of Judah grew in number and strength and we know that the Ruler of Israel would come from this line, the Lord Jesus Christ.

4.    Sometimes grandsons are listed as sons in scripture. In Neh 12:1 Zerubbabel is recorded as the son of Shealtiel. But in 1Chr 3:19 he is recorded as the son of Pedaiah who was the son of Shealtiel. In the same way in 1Chr 4:1 Judah’s sons are listed as : Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal. But we know that Hezron was the son of Perez (1Chr 2:5). This does not mean the writer was confused, it was simply a way of stating what was already known and accepted in Hebrew culture.

5.    There are some interesting one or two liners found in the genealogies. One of these is found in 1Chr 4:8, 9. It is the man of Jabez. His name literally means ‘he causes pain’ or ‘he makes sorrowful’. A terrible moniker to be known by. But the testimony is that ‘he was more honourable than his brothers’, vs 9. Rather than causing or being a pain, he wanted to be a blessing. He prays to the God of Israel and the Lord hears his prayer. He asked that his borders be expanded. Certainly, this was part of the heart of God for the people of Israel as they had inherited the land. He actually asks for 4 things 1. That the Lord would bless him 2. That He would enlarge his borders 3. That the Lord would be with him and 4. That the Lord would keep him from harm. The Lord answered these requests. We don’t know how, only that He did. This surely is our desire, that the Lord’s hand of blessing and guidance would be over us. In Christ it always is, for our good and His glory.

6.    Families are sometimes known by trades. In 1Chr 4:12 they are known as craftsmen and in vs 23 as potters who worked for the king’s service. One son had the honour of being married to a daughter of Pharoah, vs 17. She is even named, which is an honour for her – “Bithiah, the daughter of Pharaoh”. In gathering his information as noted earlier the writer states that in his research and collating that “now the records are ancient”, vs 22. This is a wonderful testament to the fact that ancient records were kept and referred to. The scriptures have a long and ancient testimony of an unbroken line of faithful records as to what the Lord has done and what He will do for His people.

7.    Simeon is the next tribe of Israel to be chronicled, 1Chr 4. While he is recorded as having 5 sons just like Judah. With the exception of Shimei who had 16 sons and 6 daughters, his brothers did not have many children as did Judah, vs 27. Again the testimony is that they kept genealogical records, vs 33.

8.    Simeon is recorded as expanding their territory as part of taking their inheritance in the land of Canaan. It says they increased greatly, vs 36 and took land from Ham. He of course is the second son of Noah and a reference back to the generation that survived the global flood. In this instance it says they were peaceful and quiet. As such were ripe to have the land taken by the tribe of Simeon, Hezekiah a godly king is mentioned and kept records as part of the Lord’s testimony among his people. As such the tribe of Simeon registered with the king these names, vs 41 and destroyed other Canaanites know as the Meunites. Leaders of Simeon destroyed the remnant of Amalekites that were declared by the Lord to be destroyed. Simeon pursued them south to Mt Seir, The writer states that “they have lived there to this day”, vs 43. An accepted testimony in the day is valid for our own day. Just as the Apostle Paul stated that Jesus was seen by 500 people at one time after He rose from the dead. Paul simply says most were still alive at the time of writing, 1Cor 15:6. We of course are living letters to the record of Jesus faithfulness to us in our lives.

Vision Point for cell groups

Sermon title was “Jerusalem – the glorious city” - from Psalm 87

1.      What is your knowledge of Jerusalem like? From your present knowledge what can you say about the city?

2.      Psalm 87 says that those from the regions of Egypt, Cush, Philistia and Babylon will be born in her, vss 4-6. How can someone be born in Jerusalem when the have been born in another country?

3.      Jesus tells Nicodemus in John 3 that he must be born again and that he must be born from above. What does this mean?

4.      The sons of Korah say in vs 7 “"All my springs are in you." Jesus calls Himself the Water of life and He spoke to the woman at the well in John 4 that the water he would give her would never run out, but in fact well up within her. What did Jesus mean? What does it mean for us?
