Things to think about…

1.    When do you consider literal recorded human history to have begun on the earth? Is it with Adam as recorded here in 1 Chronicles 1:1? Or do you as some consider the history from Abraham to be more reliable. We know that Genesis 1 records that there were 5 days and nights and then on the sixth day man was created. His name was Adam, Gen 1:26. This is why the genealogies both in Genesis and Chronicles are so important. They testify to a traceable line of human history, not only from Adam to Abraham, but also from Abraham to David and of course from David to Jesus Christ. If we lose sight of these passages which the bible takes as literal and historical we lose sight of the tragedy of the fall and then the cross of Christ loses its impact because we don’t fully appreciate what we have been saved from.

2.    The list of names in 1Chr 1:1-4 are the same names listed in Genesis 5. After 1Chr 1:4 we see the line follow Noah and his sons. This is of course due to the world-wide flood that the Lord sent on the earth in the days of Noah, Gen 6-9. No other line could be followed. All other records of human history are subservient to the records found in the scriptures. These are the oldest and have been meticulously copied by the Hebrew scribes to maintain their integrity.

3.    Note that we see the comment in 1Chr 1:19 “To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg (for in his days the earth was divided),”. What division is this. Noah’s flood had already happened 100 years earlier so it is not the separation of the land into continents. It refers to the time when the earth’s languages were divided after the people followed Nimrod at the Tower of Babel. The Lord confused their languages and Peleg is named after this event. Bishop Ussher in his “Annals of the world” puts the date at 2247BC. The chronicler then goes back in 1Chr 1:24 to Shem the son of Noah to give a brief summary of the line leading to Abraham. It’s Abraham’s line that he focusses on from 1Chr 1:28.

4.    We know in Genesis that the history of Abraham focusses on the birth and conflict between Ishmael and Isaac and the division between Abraham’s wife Sarah and Hagar her maidservant that she would give to Abraham. But here in 1 Chronicles we read “sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine she bore Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah”, 1 Chr 1:32. We know Abraham married her after Sarah died, Gen 25:1. This verse and the reference here in 1 Chronicles are all we hear of this woman, yet we know that from her sons as with Ishmael there would be enemies to the children of Israel. We know the Moses married a Midianite woman, Ex 2:15-21. But the Midianites also enticed Israel through the words of Balaam to make them ensnared by their idols through being seduced by their women, Num 25. The writer will then focus on Isaac and his sons. Esau the twin of Jacob takes up most of the rest of 1 Chr 1. Esau is also referred to as Edom, 1Chr 1:54.

5.    1 Chronicles 2 now directs the reader to the line of Israel whom we also know as Jacob. It’s in this chapter we see tid bits of history that are further explained in the scriptures. Note that it says “Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death”, vs 3. We do not know what wickedness he did, but his widow Tamar then married Onan because as the next in line he was called to raise up an inheritance for his brother. He did not do this because he spilled his semen onto the ground when he had intercourse with Tamar. The Lord also struck Onan down because what he did was wicked as well, Gen 38:10. Shelah was not given to Tamar. Maybe Judah did not want to lose his last surviving son. We know Tamar took things into her own hands.

6.    We also read of “Achan, the troubler of Israel, who broke faith in the matter of the devoted thing;”, vs 7. Another sad chapter in the early conquest of Canaan by Israel where Ai defeated Israel because of Achan’s coveting of things devoted to the Lord.

7.    We also see the line of David from 1Chr 2:11-15 who will of course take on a major role in the records of the chronicles.

8.    Caleb also gets a mention in 1Chr 2:18, 19, 42, 48-50. The reasoning no doubt is due to the fact that he was the only one who went in with Joshua of the original 12 spies that would go on to attack and finally inherit the land.

Sermon title was “Jerusalem – the glorious city” - from Psalm 87

1.      What is your knowledge of Jerusalem like? From your present knowledge what can you say about the city

2.      Psalm 87 says that those from the regions of Egypt, Cush, Philistia and Babylon will be born in her, vss 4-6. How can someone be born in Jerusalem when the have been born in another country?

3.      Jesus tells Nicodemus in John 3 that he must be born again and that he must be born from above. What does this mean?

4.      The sons of Korah say in vs 7 “"All my springs are in you." Jesus calls Himself the Water of life and He spoke to the woman at the well in John 4 that the water he would give her would never run out, but in fact well up within her. What did Jesus mean?
