Sacrifices and Peace offerings and the mercy seat.

We continue our theme of law and order through numbers. All tribes participate in the offerings at the tabernacle.

Numbers 7: Offerings at the Tabernacle's Consecration

1     On the day when Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle and had anointed and consecrated it with all its furnishings and had anointed and consecrated the altar with all its utensils,

2     the chiefs of Israel, heads of their fathers' houses, who were the chiefs of the tribes, who were over those who were listed, approached

3     and brought their offerings before the LORD, six wagons and twelve oxen, a wagon for every two of the chiefs, and for each one an ox. They brought them before the tabernacle.

4     Then the LORD said to Moses,

5     "Accept these from them, that they may be used in the service of the tent of meeting, and give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service."

6     So Moses took the wagons and the oxen and gave them to the Levites.

7     Two wagons and four oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to their service.

8     And four wagons and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

9     But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, because they were charged with the service of the holy things that had to be carried on the shoulder.

Things to think about…

1.          Numbers 7 is repetitive in nature because it covers the requirements for the consecration of the vessels that were dedicated to the Tabernacle for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. One chief of every tribe brought their offering for the tribe of Israel they represented. This happened over twelve consecutive days. This ensured that all tribes would be represented before the Mercy Seat who were on the ark of the testimony, Num 7: 89. These sacrifices and peace offerings by the 12 tribes represent the ultimate sacrifice for peace over sin, the Lord Jesus Christ. While these verses are monotonous in nature, they declare a very important truth and as such warrant a place in scripture. Christ is the Mercy seat who represents us before the Lord. Christ has offered His life for our representation before God’s throne. He intercedes even now at the right hand of the Father, Rom 8:34. Praise God! All these offerings by the tribes were to point Israel to their ultimate fulfillment found in their Messiah, Yeshua. But they missed it and by and large still do to this day.

2.          What do the three offerings represent that the twelve tribes each had to bring at the dedication of the altar – the burnt offering, the sin offering, the peace offerings? The burnt offering was to cover unintentional sin, devotion and complete surrender to the Lord, the sin offering was mandatory and involved confession and forgiveness of sin to cover a cleansing from all defilement. The peace offering celebrated restoration peace with God and other tribes, fellowship and communion under God. Christ unites us in all of these things through his atoning work for our sin on the cross.

3.          There were three offerings and three objects given by each of the tribes for their representation at the Tabernacle. The objects were a plate, a basin and a dish. We of course are living sacrifices and are called to offer our gifts, works and praise to our Saviour to bring Him glory. These offerings cost the tribes. Our service for Christ should cost something that shows our devotion to Him.

4.          Modern day Israel miss in all their devotion and adherence to the festivals that point to their true messiah, Yeshua. Being enslaved to Old Testament Law with their desire to build a third temple to adhere to slavish obedience to the law blinds them to the grace of Christ and the forgiveness of sin that comes freely through Him. Praise God the words of the Apostle Paul are true Rom 6:14 “ For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” Amen.
