David writes these next 2 psalms from a place of joy and trust. He has known the Lord’s protection and writes psalms of praise in response.
Psalms 20: Trust in the Name of the LORD Our God To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1 May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion!
3 May he remember all your offerings and regard with favour your burnt sacrifices! Selah
4 May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfil all your plans!
5 May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the LORD fulfil all your petitions!
6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
8 They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.
9 O LORD, save the king! May he answer us when we call.
Psalms 21: The King Rejoices in the LORD's Strength To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1 O LORD, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults!
2 You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.
4 He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.
5 His glory is great through your salvation; splendour and majesty you bestow on him.
6 For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the LORD, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.
8 Your hand will find out all your enemies; your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them as a blazing oven when you appear. The LORD will swallow them up in his wrath, and fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth, and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them to flight; you will aim at their faces with your bows.
13 Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength! We will sing and praise your power.
Things to think about…
1. David’s prayer for his people in Psalm 20 is my prayer for you as your pastor. May God answer you, vs 1, help you and give you support, vs 2, may He grant your heart’s desires, vs 4 and fulfil all your petitions, vs 5. May He answer you when you call, vs 9. Keep trusting in Him. We are not at the end of “Life’s Psalm”, but at beginning of His return. Hallelujah!!
2. David seems to be writing Psalm 21 from both a personal and a prophetic position. He acknowledges the Lord’s deliverance and salvation for him, but then he says his length of days are forever, vs 4 and that his glory is forever and he is blessed forever. Surely these characteristics belong with Christ alone. This is true as Jesus is David’s greater Son and the true king of Israel. But David as the king is a representative and type of Christ as he reflects the Lord’s blessing and promises as he rules on the throne of Israel in Jerusalem. Christ will rule there for the Millennium and in the heavenly Jerusalem for eternity Rev 20, 21.
3. In Psalm 21 King David, even in praise, has no illusions as to the Lord’s hatred for his enemies. The Lord’s bows are aimed at the faces of His enemies, Ps 21:12. We serve an all-powerful God, described as a consuming fire. Give Him praise, honour and glory regardless of the season.
Vision statement for CBC
CBC’s Vision :- To be a growing biblical church community, significantly influencing our city and beyond, through intentional outreach, fulfilling our mission.
Sermon:-“Where are you going” – Psalm 1.
a. Have you ever been lost. What was it like and how long were you lost?
b. We are told that the way of blessing is when we delight ourselves in the Lord and turn away from ungodly counsel. This is easier said than done at times. Reading and meditating on the scriptures is given as a remedy. How is this the case and what is your present reading/studying program?
c. The promise is that you will bear fruit in season. What season are you in? Have you been in a tough season? Did you still bear fruit for Christ at that time?
d. Some people are spiritually lost. On the 26th July – a Wednesday night we will be running our first alpha night for non-Christians. Who can you invite to that first evening?
e. Pray for the events we have coming up – especially the Community Day on Saturday.
